TIL: HTTP Live Streaming is just a fancy M3U playlist of MP4 fragments at various encodings. Clients must periodically refresh the playlist to get the upcoming fragments, and Twitch uses that to implement in-stream ads by omitting the next fragment temporarily and replacing it with an ad video.

This is... Shockingly pragmatic for how well it works?
