musings on ffxiv (spoilers)
1.0 ended with the Warriors of Light failing to stop the Seventh Umbral Calamity, which was symbolic in its own. It coincides with the franchise's lowest point in its history, and a reckoning with which the team had come to terms with. The team invested a lot of labor in bringing the game back from the brink.
5.0 has us returned, stronger than ever, with the lessons of several years in tow to stop the Eighth. It coincides with the strongest point in the game's history in terms of financials, and brings with it a trove of thematic consciousness relevant to today's world.
The game is a product and a service being sold to the benefit of SquareEnix's owners, but it's carrying with it an interesting message, I think.
@fraggle@octodon.social my grazings with the games industry suggests to me this happened because the vast majority of the new talent flowing in is mobile-centric and trained on Unity, and the product leadership that seeps in comes from the mobile market too.
so a producer from that space might think "yeah this seems fine, it'll be easy because everyone we hired has experience in unity"
this is of course very silly. there are dozens of people they could have hired with far more expertise on doom specifically.
How are they in on it? Welllllll.
They have a website too...
They plan to work with Republicans on our Cybersecurity.
literally they didn't have to put the bethnet shit in these ports and nobody would have cared about it using unity
