I am deeply appreciative that @Gargron took the time to try and address the issues with the joinmastodon front page that the viral tweet mentioned.

We have to navigate to a more positive, cooperative and constructive internet if we are to see broader social change for the better, and I feel we all bear responsibility for that.

The social capital accruement from pointless complaining/"calling out" software or networks for being "bad" is one that fundamentally, I believe, fuels the fire that results in call-out culture of real people, because they are both done for the same purpose. It is an ugly consequence of the abandonment of social responsibility and praise of negativity that Twitter et al have sponsored.

There is an informal RFC from the IETF on nettiquette from 1995 that I read recently. The values it espoused were ones I recall seeing dissolve through my time on Twitter because Twitter intentionally designed itself to tear down social moores and make its userbase feel like individual heroes who feel it necessary to run mini-crusades against things we don't like. We can do better than this, and Fedi has a unique opportunity to fix the harm that's been done.

We also have to bury the social patterns that Twitter et al imposed upon us. The criticism was useful, but it was not written to encourage Mastodon's improvement. It was a flaunting of social capital, intentional provocative, a behaiour we have deeply ingrained and likely are all responsible for doing at some point due to the gamification of social media (florps and retweets)

I also argue that, were cloud platforms to be ultimately eliminated from the internet, we would see a resurgence in federation as it would become technically necessary again.

That will likely not happen any time soon, though.

And, meanwhile, big corporations are going to try to extinguish any attempt at this because a proliferation of federated technologies will end up destroying their empires.

Federation as a technology has been superceded by large corporations with enormous amounts of resources to throw at commoditized server space, but the social value of federation has not gone away, and somehow we have to re-teach that before we can really do anything else.

We can't even teach instances like picking an email provider because nobody chooses their email provider anymore. They're either in Gmail or they're on a company provided Microsoft Exchange or Google Apps domain.

Teaching federation requires a fundamental social change in the way we treat the internet, a damage caused by the last decade and a half of deep centralization of services. That's not Mastodon or the Fediverse's fault, but it inevitably impacts it.
