The 1990s 3D landscape was super weird and super interesting. Of course I grew up during that, so working with the Voodoo card I could never get is really cool.
One of the big reasons 3dfx took off was because they released an OpenGL wrapper for hardware accelerating Quake, pushing people to standardize on 3dfx cards with a wide install base. OpenGL was strictly high-end SGI tech and D3D was a farce.
Mechwarrior 2 was released in in ATI, Rendition, Glide, PowerVR, ViRGE, and Direct3D flavors!
