Twitter, drama (cont.)

I find Jaron Lanier very insightful here. He points out that algorithmic social media tends to split people into two teams, then shows the most extreme/outrageous version of one team to the other so that they can whip themselves up into a frenzy.

"And it just turns out as a matter of course, that the same data that is a positive, constructive process for the people who generated it […] can be used to irritate other groups."

Twitter, drama

I don't use Twitter, but via RSS and Mastodon crossposters I occasionally get a glimpse into some drama that's going on over there. I see mention of a "holy war", "<x>-gate", etc., even within some innocuous community like webdev or JavaScript.

There is no holy war; there is only Twitter whipping up controversy for engagement. If you think the "other side" is some cartoonish caricature of evil, ask yourself who benefits from presenting that worldview to you.

Before the rise of industry, it was normal for people to sleep in two phases each night.

People had no set bedtimes. Sleeping was determined by whether or not there were things to do. Most people would have a first and second sleep, with a couple of hours awake inbetween. This is probably the way humans are supposed to sleep.

Modern schedules don't really let us do that. Perhaps we should think about changing that.

loaded sprite sheets from the SWF into array textures and made a material that indexes on it. might figure out how to extend the asset manager to dynamically generate the textures as needed instead of all at once...

google pulling some absolute bullshit with that fucking "even if you send Accept-Encoding: identity, I will only ever give you Content-Encoding: gzip"???

was rather effortless after passing through the bullshit low level stream stuff. parsed all the images and binary data/XML/OBJ right out of the swf now.

SWF: at a high level I'm really simple, but actually fuck you, here's some bit level shenanigans and fixed point hell math
