I'm kind of confused why they keep remaking the same DBZ story over and over again

Did you know Quake was originally going to be an RPG

Hey. You don't have to be drowning in despair all the time. If you're seeing bad stuff on the timeline or on news sites and it is stressing you out, you can just walk away. Nobody has any right to tell you off for staying away when you need to.

Take care of yourselves.

TIL

“Did you know that bees sleep between 5-8 hours a day, sometimes in flowers? Also, they like to sleep with other bees and hold each other’s feet”

I'm 8 episodes into Made in Abyss where the fuck is Nanachi

will someone please rid me of these meddlesome weeds

This is particularly silly because Chrome itself even handles the Google Translate integration by observing a combination of Content-Language and the lang attribute of the HTML tag. So some parts of Google seem to recognize this standard, while the search indexer uses fucking content heuristics and separate IPs to detect content language, and totally ignores the standard headers and html features.

@shaderphantom The GeoIP database is also wildly wrong quite often and ignores things like entire countries having no official/expected language for its citizens.

But well google doing crap that harms users is about as old as google is.

Example: just because I am accessing a Google site from an IP geolocated in Japan does not mean I want content localized in Japanese. Especially if my browser is already telling the web server I want it in English. Which it is.

Google is causing incalculable damage to the global web with its search indexer not respecting Accept-Language and Content-Language and encouraging webmasters to detect language preferences by IP geolocation instead of respecting the user agent's explicitly provided preference.

I have just been made aware that the composer for the Quake mission packs was Jeehun Hwang, who also did the soundtrack to Dark Reign, a 90s RTS I really love

I really love that you can literally build anything out of random planes in Quake and it will not look entirely out of place for the game.

Sure love that my executive dysfunction stopped me from properly pre-treating my lawn last fall and now I'm suffering for it :ms_upside_down_smile:

Grump-post about people complaining about the dollar-impact of GDQ

There's a lot of hand-wringing over how GDQ isn't as efficient as directly contributing to a charity and that somehow makes it problematic. That's completely incorrect.

You can always donate to its supported charity directly if you feel so, but at the end of the day it doesn't matter: those dollars from the charity's marketing budget are still going to GDQ because they get returned 15-20 fold.

GDQ also does not skim anything from donations; 100% of the donations go to the charity. It's completely funded up front by a combination of reg fees and the charity's marketing budget.

If it wasn't GDQ, those dollars would go somewhere else for marketing; that's the point of a marketing budget. And whatever else it went to would probably not have the same ROI as GDQ.

So this thought that GDQ being involved in the pipe reduces the dollar impact is only true in-so-far as some expense is taken to make GDQ happen. However the $1 you give goes 100% to the charity and the GDQ funding comes from a budget exclusive FOR driving more donations and without it, the $3.13m we saw from AGDQ 2020 would have never happened.

What do you want here? GDQ somehow happen at its scale for free? That the attendees contribute more than the fifth of a million they did to make it happen?

Sigh.

Oh god, it's worse than last year. So much worse. I gotta nip this in the bud (literally), but it's kinda rainy and gross outside so I can't 2,4D it all to hell.
