birdsite link, US politics, FOSTA-SESTA, sex work (-)

I retweeted this thread on my twitter but I think it is very important to share it here too. FOSTA-SESTA is a law that could potentially end a lot of small websites and force sex workers underground.

This law is going to go into effect next month and the reason why tumblr is cracking down on nsfw content is precisely because of this law.

It is very important that you give this thread a read if you can.

@EGKangaroo Based on my understanding, the reason why Tumblr is doing this is because of CSA stuff.

Instead of dealing with it properly, they decided to take the nuclear option, and it backfired.

@squeakycheetah I don't think tumblr really cared about the matter of CSA.

What they do care about is the possibility of being sued for missing even a single ad that could be constructed as sexual sollicitation, which is exactly what FOSTA-SESTA will do.

It's also why a lot of other websites are enacting similar rules and why smaller websites have disappeared just about overnight when the law was signed this year such as pounced.org

@EGKangaroo If Tumblr didn't care, and Apple seems to have cared..then we should be running from Tumblr as fast as we can.

@squeakycheetah It sucks to be honest. I WISH this was just tumblr deciding to just use a shotgun method to get rid of CSA (and practically all other nsfw content with it) but yeah, it's kinda much worse than that.
