However, we may not need to go with re-inventing the wheel. I am of the philospthy of making do with what you have. For really short range networks, ethernet can work, but for longer range, wireless is needed.

Trouble is, it's imited in distance. A really basic mesh network could be made with a few routers, and maybe a few repeaters. Basic? Yeah, but anyone can do it, things are easily avalible, and it could be set up within an hour or so.
