consent

A lot of people say that consent is really simple; yes means yes and no means no and as long as you communicate clearly everything is fine.

That's a dangerous oversimplification. It's not *wrong*, but it ignores a whole heap of nasty and subtle failure modes. The degree to which our culture ignores consent can take a lot of unlearning, and to say that it's simple makes it easy to gloss over dangerous underwater currents that can sweep away the unwary.

drugs

Okay though, we have some pretty good chemically synthesized recreational drugs

but how good could they get if we didn't have institutions that hate on the very concept of recreational drugs generally?

I'm guessing, pretty dang good.

Maybe in the future... :)

....I just now realized I got the reading order wrong by reading Four Roads Cross before Last First Snow. Dammit :(

("lawyer-sorceresses" is about the best I know how to describe Craftswomen :p )

Check out the Craft Sequence if you want to read some exciting and well-written novels about interplay between magic, capitalism, faith, devotion, and ambition.

The first book, Three Parts Dead, is about a duo of lawyer-sorceresses hired to resurrect a murdered god fundamental to a city's economy.

Hey, the new Notifications color theme on here is pretty cool :)

Y'know how I won't shut up about people making assumptions about users' internet speed?

Birdsite now refuses to load in-browser on my phone (the mobile site) because it takes more than 1500ms to finish rendering, and instead just tells me "Birdsite is taking too long to load".

BIRDSITE: "Fuck you, all rural/non-US users!"

food

Partner describing trying seitan for the first time: "it's like beefy bread!"

(I confess, a lot of the time I can still be pretty dismissive, but I'm trying to fight that impulse.)

I used to be kinda indie-elitist and dismissive of wide swaths of pop, but y'know what, there's a *lot* of value in having music out there that's both catchy and familiar to ~everyone.

Friends, cats and other mastodon users - are you ready and willing to do some SCIENCE?

I am asking because I have made this survey about the difference between being on Twitter and being on Mastodon, and would appreciate you taking three minutes of your time to fill it out

Thank you for reading. May good things come your way

On the preferences page you can select which languages to remove from your public timeline views

You can also hide content from specific domains from profile dropdowns, though I highly discourage the use of that feature unless absolutely necessary

In the profile dropdown, you will find a "media" link, that will display a gallery

If you get tagged in a DM reply-all bonanza, you can "mute conversation"

Just figured I'd highlight these from the release notes

lol, loud guy on this bus irritatedly shouting "back door!" and trying to get let off when we're at a stoplight b/c he thinks it's an actual stop.

Feature suggestion: an ANNOUNCE visibility, accessible only to admins, that puts a notifications into the home timeline of everyone on the instance. Basically for the use-case of "shit's broken folks, stand by" and similar, for people not following the admin.

(and I mean even even several of us outside of the ~many of you I already know from postfurry spaces)
