There's something about brown dwarf stars I find vaguely unsettling.

Stars are supposed to be hot, dangit.

Was able to upgrade to the Cobra Mk III in Elite Dangerous. Named the new ship "Tragic Theodicy".

If I may toot my own horn for a moment, I think that's a damn fine name for a spaceship.

Do most people who watch Aliens recognize Ripley's protectiveness of Newt as solidarity in the face of shared trauma, or is it attributed to her having mom feels?

'Cause the former is way better supported by the text and gives the film a whole lot more depth.

Elite Dangerous question

So apparently there's a federation and an empire? Who are these chumps, and do I care?

It's not often I hear a cover and think "this is what the song was always meant to be".

Halestorm's version of Get Lucky is such a cover.

Goodnight.

GRS advice

Hey so even if your surgeon's office says "just give us the documentation and we'll take care of the insurance approval", don't trust that they'll actually do it.

I just called my insurer to say "hey how's that pre-authorization coming, do you need anything else from me?" and they apparently hadn't even received the pre-auth request from my surgeon, with less than two months before showtime.

Some beauty from this morning. Camera on new phone seems adequate.

Seriously though one of the best things about starting work earlyish is sunrises.

On the other hand, I did just find a forum thread titled "Why can't i jettison passengers?"

guns cost mass y'know! And actual fighters will fuck up a cargo freighter anyway so it's just not worth it.

As someone who is getting increasingly irritated by videogame violence, here's one thing I really appreciate about Elite Dangerous: for most playstyles, running completely unarmed isn't just feasible, it's mechanically encouraged.

My Grandad's advice for safe driving was: "Always remember you're controlling a potentially lethal weapon". I think it helped me to take driving even more seriously.

Perhaps it's good advice for us technologists too...

"Always remember you're programming a potential platform for bullying and harassment".

"Always remember you're designing a potential system for mass surveillance".

"Always remember you're deploying a potential tool for mass social unrest".

(this fuckin' shitpost has been rattling around in my head for weeks and I finally had to give up and post it.)

Well kids, y'know, it's like that old song always said: you don't see with your eyes, you perceive with your mind.

Whee, new phone get. I didn't really want to spend that money right now but my old phone was having an increasing number of issues even before it failed. Upside is, now I have reception inside my house.

Phone screen is no longer responding to touch.

Gonna see if I can get a new one ASAP so I guess that what I'm doing this evening.

starkatt - It's still kind of blowing my mind that the playable area of Elite Dangerous is the entire Milky Way.

Not just "select locations in the Milky Way". All of them. 150,000 real-world surveyed stars and 400 billion procedural ones. And, yeah, most of them have accompanying planets and moons.

Only the local bubble is actually /inhabited/ but that's still a huge number of locations. If you want to hop all the way to the center of the galaxy 20ly at a time, there's nothing to stop you.

The game also seems like the kind of thing that really works best if you sink hundreds of hours into it and I just don't have that kind of time.
