to clarify what i'm looking for, i want the oldest game *by its listed release date on Steam*. i know there are some pongs and zorks and such on there that are (in some form) strictly older than 1983, but the versions on steam are updates or collections or remakes with newer release dates; this also disqualifies stuff like atari 2600 games that were put up there as part of newer collections

@Hearth that's for the board game. the monopoly video games on steam are all listed by the date the specific games were released

i wonder what the oldest release date on a steam game is. the commercial port of Rogue is on there and was released in 1985, that has to be close to the oldest

hey bby are you the subtle but allusive chapter illustrations of the original jurassic park novel because you've got dragon curves

@kistaro someone probably said this already, but this post got a shoutout on Checkpoint - youtube.com/watch?v=Fo7srJS-k1 - and that's how i found out about it! thanks for bringing it to my attention

For folks with 3DS CFW, someone has now written a tool (a patched version of gm9, specifically) to force refresh the NAND, with an option to list how many bad blocks it found so you can see if you're getting anywhere with repeated cycles: gbatemp.net/threads/corrupted-

Nintendo Switch and Nintendo 3DS cartridges use NAND flash for storage , not mask ROMs. Like all Flash memory, they "leak" charge over time and eventually lose data.

The Switch and 3DS card reader tells game cards to "refresh" themselves periodically. gbatemp.net/threads/nintendo-s

But, some users are reporting cartridges already dying, especially ones they haven't used for years. I wonder which of mine already don't work.

Just a reminder that you don't own any data you can't back up. Buying physical cartridges and game cards isn't enough if they're using technology that inevitably deteriorates over time.

Today I will be posting thoughts about Aaron Swartz, who died on this day in 2013. The academic community should be much more aware of him, and challenge the massive problem of academic publishing that we are all part of. Let's make it our mission to tell people about Aaron and what he stood for.

@pup_hime different successors for each of the theory channels iirc! but yes. but still, i sank like 60 hours into silly powerwash game in the past week, let me have this

am i overthinking the lore of a game about spraying preposterously dirty objects with a pressure washer? yes, but someone has to do it now that matpat has retired

Show thread

@pup_hime that's actually exactly what i was thinking. is that word of god or did you simply come to the same conclusion i did

where is powerwash simulator meant to take place? "muckingham" is a very uk sort of name for a municipality, and everyone talks like a brit and things have british names (and indeed the game is made by a uk studio), but the currency is denoted with dollars and the story of career mode involves going to the pacific ocean. also there's a desert accessible via car (or, say, powerwashing service commercial van) from muckingham

Bar for time travelers. A programmer from the 21st century is complaining about bugs caused by time zones. A programmer from the 31st century scoffs and starts talking about bugs caused by relativistic time dilation. Next to them, the guy who writes the firmware for the time machines is grinding his teeth
