With the hurricane about to hit CA, I want to talk about what to do. I know a lot of you have never been through this and I want to assure you, most people will be fine. But in case, this is what I have learned.
This hurricane will weaken as it moves onto land and you don’t have to deal with storm surge (the most dangerous part). It should be a tropical storm by it gets to CA, but will bring strong gusts and lots of rain.
The worst of the weather will be on the east side of the storm. The west is ‘dry’ and will likely not be bad.
Move anything not bolted down outside either up against the house or inside. Stay away from windows because if a gusts picks up something, it can put it through a window.
Expect power loss. Be ready for the heat. Take a picture of the contents of your fridge/freezer and you can claim the losses on insurance. Speaking of, eat this food first. Try not to open the fridge much. Freeze what you can before.
Expect water to be contaminated. Have a way to boil or treat water. Fill up any bathtub you have. Use it to flush the toilet. If it’s yellow let it mellow, if it’s brown, flush it down.
Do not go out. Power lines might be down. Do not get into the water, it’s contaminated. Expect power to be out for a long time. Days.
If you are in a low lying area, get an axe and put it in your attic. It’s how you are going to get out of it floods.
Trees might come down because their roots can’t hold in saturated soil. Do not be in rooms under them. Downed trees will make travel difficult if not impossible. Land/mud slides are a real risk too.
Tornados are more likely on the East side. They sound like a train. Get into the center of the house with a blanket or mattress over you, no windows. They aren’t likely so far inland.
Fill water bottles. Try to get extra doses of medication. Know how to turn off gas and water to the house, in case something breaks (unlikely, but still).
The wind is relentless. It will be most similar to the Santa Anna winds, plus rain. Keep your shoes near in case you have to go. Prepare pets to go.
It is very unlikely you will have the worst case situations, but better to prepare and not need it.
Best wishes to all and hope this helps.
