walt jabsco, as he is apparently named, was featured on the covers of records by The Specials. i think he was included as a character in, uh, webdings? and as unicode was first being formulated iirc they took most of the characters from the *dings font family and gave them all their own codepoints, and walt jabsco came in with the rest. that's what i remember anyway

part of why regexes feel like dark magic to a lot of people is that they look like symbol vomit. you could probably make them a lot more usable if you made them more verbose... somehow made it easier to insert nonsignificant whitespace and comments...
