Welcome to all the new folks! Mastodon is a lot like Twitter, but there are two etiquette things I'd like to remind everyone of.

1. Add alt text to your images so people know what they're looking at! Click where it says "No description added" and you can describe the image to everyone.

2. Use hashtags! You can follow a hashtag in the same way you'd follow an account, so it's great for helping people find your work. Bonus points if you CamelCase the tags.

So I’m not an active Masto user, but after having been a pretty heavy Twitter user who quit back in April, some advice for those of you looking for it:

When (if) Twitter gets back up, go to your follows list. Visit every profile and check for alternate sites. Follow them *now*. Then log the fuck out and delete the app.

I've been talking with friends about how to counter the emerging impossibility of searching the web (because of LLMs spamming non-content), and one idea was to revive manually curated link lists or search engines. does anything like that already exist? or is in development?

(I'm amused about me using mastodon to do a query about this!)

Alriiiight so Musk finally took a step it didn't even occur to me he'd take. Twitter's gone completely private. You can't see *any* page unless you're logged in. Not tweets, not profiles. (Embeds still work.) You can't even see whether a profile exists without being logged in.

Or maybe it's a bug? Twitter has literally no messaging anymore even on huge policy changes.

Anyway, I'm giving them until July 30, if they haven't fixed it by then I'm hosting an offsite archive and deleting my Tweets.
