We live in a society that punishes compassion. Not in a cynical misanthropic way, i mean that money is neccessarily a zero sum game. We live in a system where going out of your way means sacrificing time, and time is money

And yet we still care about each other. That says a lot about our potential

I was reading yet another article on HN about how companies that had a lot of people switch to working from home are taking punitive measures to make people come back to the office and I suddenly wonder if *anyone* is trying a carrot rather than a stick: "we will give you more money if you spend this much time in the office."

Because seriously all the IT nerds I see whining about this on Hacker News are also mostly perfect spherical economic units who exist only to maximize their profit and you would think they would react to this like small children offered free candy.

When they gather for a rally like this, they're waging a turf war.

They're trying to establish an "unsafe space" so to speak- they do this by turning out in numbers. Just like any protest, the more people that show on their side, the more emboldened the movement becomes to take further action.

If the movement is overwhelmed by opposition early on in a given region, they're less likely to return to that region.
