I don't understand companies that still give out a 7-digit phone number, even if the area code is given as a sort of extra
the area code is no longer meaningfully different from any other part of the phone number
@roguecnidarian what's the 564 area code? I'm not familiar with the specific timelines here. (also why NPA-NXX-xxxx instead of just xxx-xxx-xxxx; I get the feeling N and P and A mean things)
phone stuff
@Felthry it’s a new overlay area code (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Overlay_plan?wprov=sfti1) for western Washington (state) because 206 (Seattle metro), 425 (Bellvue), 253 (Tacoma), and 360 (the rest of western Washington) are running out of available numbers. Implementation mandataed 10-digit dialling. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Area_code_564
And yeah, NPA = Numbering Plan Area code
NXX = exchange
xxxx = phone number
And my job is for the phone company so the jargon and terminology kind of suffuses my brain
@Felthry yep. When you only had a landline and didn’t have overlay area codes it made sense. But they put in the new 564 area code it broke so much 7-digit dialling locally …
And when the area codes are included, they’re often put in (parentheses), but it should just be NPA-NXX-xxxx indicating it’s not optional.
