@Felthry You know, I'm not really sure how to tell these apart listening to them!

@Felthry Thanks! Examples are exactly what I need; it's not that I couldn't tell them apart, I don't think, just I don't know what to /look/ for since I've never listened to any sounds with labels of "this is fixed" / "this is FM".

@IceWolf yeah they're easy to tell apart when you know what they mean! FM synthesis is commonly called "twangy" because, well, it kinda is when you make guitar sounds with it

fixed waveforms (there isn't really an "official" name for this, it's just what i'm calling it) are much simpler hardware-wise but *may* be less versatile, it's debatable

@Felthry we've been having an absolute blast using PICO-8's fixed waveforms, but FM synthesis is just /cool/ - even if it's a lot more complicated to figure out.

@Felthry @packbat I think “discrete oscillators” would be a better term than “fixed waveforms.” Especially since the SID in particular has a bunch of filter stages that massively affect the sound.

@fluffy @packbat yeah that's a much better term! i couldn't think of what to call them
