Rosemary had a neat idea the other day for a chess variant and since zhe doesn't seem to feel up to posting it ever (zhe has the worst social anxiety of all of us, i think), i will mention it here:
Consider a normal game of chess, except at the start of the game, each player gets to replace any one of the opponent's pawns with an infiltrator, which acts exactly like a pawn except that at any time the opponent can choose to take control of it (it still moves like its disguised color)

@Felthry Okay this sounds very fun!
If it reaches the end of the board, then what?
@Tathar i would assume it promotes as usual, but maybe restricted to not promote to a queen?

I'd say if it promotes without having been revealed, the side promoting automatically loses.
I am mildly tempted to actually take a stab at coding this variant! It sounds rather entertaining and simple to do.
@Felthry That's an intriguing idea, yes. Nice thought.
After revealing itself though, it *can* capture pieces of *either* color, but no longer follows the commands of its disguise color. the fact that it can only move as its disguise color is to prevent a game from starting out with one king effectively in check
i guess it also can't reveal itself by taking the king because that would just be rude
