at work today, an electrician our boss had called came in. we showed him around and pointed out the things we needed done, then he left to get supplies... and never came back. we called the company and they said he cancelled the appointment.
anyone have any idea what could have happened here? just someone shirking work, or do you think this is likely to be someone scoping out the place for a robbery or something?

That is super weird. Were they aware that he stopped at your place at all?
@zetasyanthis I don't know, it was our boss who called them

I'd say that probably makes a big difference, but... yeah. He could have just left for a family emergency or something, but cancellation (esp. without notification) is another thing entirely.
@zetasyanthis he also asked us how much a piece of equipment costs but i *think* that was just idle curiosity considering said piece of equipment is huge and weighs like 400 pounds--not exactly prime burglary target material
it does seem a little suspicious in hindsight, though i suppose it is an impressive-looking piece of equipment and it was related to the job we'd hired him for (adding a 3φ outlet for it in a proper location was one of the things we wanted done)

@dodec @zetasyanthis i agree... he's said he's going to look for a different company to hire an electrician from to do the work, but I worry about what's going on here.
Maybe it was some kind of family emergency or something, or maybe he saw what we were asking and thought it too daunting
I don't know what happened though
