all i know about star ocean is i played one when i was a kid and i expected it to be a cool scifi game and then they dump you on a fantasy planet for the entire game and i felt INREDIBLY betrayed

"haha this is a cool idea, i can't wait for them to go back into space and do stuff there or maybe go to some other planets"

(80 hours later)

"i will never trust again"

@kat Yeah, it varies by game, but they always have some amount (usually more than not) of spending time on undeveloped planets with magic and stuff, but always has a reason why by the end as it wraps back around to sci-fi.

@Facet i just wish it was like... more sci-fi and less "fantasy game with 10 minutes of sci-fi on each end" ahaha

@kat I think the one with the most planet hopping and sci-fi by volume is 4, but a large part of that is because it's the origin of the series timeline and goes about visiting places from the games before it.

It also has the most... Galvanizingly anime-trope characters of the series that I'm aware of, sometimes neat, sometimes laughable, and sometimes mildly uncomfortable.

@Facet i think my ideal JRPG is just a 100% sci-fi space game but it's really hard to find that except as "what if we put it in a corner of this totally different game" usually haha

@kat @Facet The phantasy star series, maybe? Also Rogue Galaxy?

@Felthry @kat Classic Phantasy Star counts, but 1-3 are pretty rough in varied ways. 4 is fantastic though.
