pokemon coliseum and xd

@heatherhorns no you're thinking of stadium! that had no double battles because they hadn't been invented yet.

Pokemon Coliseum was the follow-up to stadium, but it added a lot more including...actual story, it plays like a normal pokemon game but in 3d, a decade before X and Y did it. it takes place in the Orre region, the first pokemon region that was based on somewhere outside japan (Arizona, specifically)

the story is more serious and the worldbuilding more believable than any other pokemon game before or since, i think

every single battle in pokemon coliseum is a double battle, which is why it comes up

XD is a direct sequel to coliseum with a different protagonist and all the same mechanics and stuff, it was our first gamecube game

@heatherhorns also this recurring villain whose entire personality is disco and who is constantly dancing, and specifically trains pokemon with idle animations that look like they're dancing

also the most ridiculous afro

his unique battle music is pretty nice too, especially in XD:

Coliseum: youtube.com/watch?v=9u-KVZbbiV
XD: youtube.com/watch?v=QzUq4238Cd

(i have no idea what they were thinking with the genre choice in coliseum, he's very clearly meant to be a big disco fan)
