@socks things we consider essential to being a jrpg:
- A levelling and equipment system (Ys has this)
- combat takes place in a separate mode from exploration, with or without a battle transition (Ys does not have this)
- More emphasis than the average game on story (Ys has this)
- Combat that is more strategic than execution-based (Ys does not have this)
those are the things i can think of right now, which are why Ys feels way more like an action game than a JRPG to us
