what exactly does the number in sandpaper refer to anyway? like 60 grit is really coarse and 1500 grit is really fine but what's the number actually measure

@Felthry The abrasive grains in sandpaper are sorted/sized by sieving, the grit number is the number of holes in a square inch of filter screen.
