it just occurred to me that a lot of people these days may not know why phone numbers are arranged the way they are, in groups of numbers

specifically thinking about US phone numbers here, from what we've seen about the UK phone system i suspect no one has ever known why phone numbers are arranged they way they are in the UK, that's some real nonsense

and we don't know anything about other countries

...but yeah - like, we're pretty sure our phone requires us to include the area code - it's just part of the number now

and the distinction of second three-digit block being a - *checks Wikipedia* - central office code is kind of not a thing we think about
