when and why and how did the word "avatar" or "icon" turn into "pfp"

@Cauda yeah i know what it stands for but why
we had at least two perfectly serviceable words already and i have an irrational and entirely unfounded dislike of this new word (i am not being entirely serious here, but i do actually dislike it)

I suspect it has something to do with the rise of real name policies and "serious" social media where you're expected to use your actual face vs. a "handle" and a constructed identity
