pretty sure the majority of our friends and even remote acquaintances are some flavor of queer

this thought isn't going anywhere, i just thought it

I'm never sure if being aro/ace counts, because if anything it feels like the opposite. Past straight and out the other side into "no".

@dodec I'd count it! the way we define queer is just anything that isn't the societal norm, and being aro/ace is not the societal norm

@Felthry @dodec

yep, I count it too for the same reason. ace/aro people definitely have that same kind of lack of representation in media and role models and 'wait, you DON'T want to get married/have sex?' confusion

@Patashu @dodec we also have the same "wait there's a word for that?" experience that basically all queer people have

i remember being annoyed at shoehorned-in romance subplots in media long before we knew what aromanticism was

I always saw FF6's Terra as an ideal model for how to write an ace/aro character. She goes through all this anguish about how she doesn't seem to feel love the way other people do, and in the end discovers that she's just as capable of it - but it's not for anyone in particular, it's a love for other people in general and a drive to use her power to help them.
