So uh. Why do English speakers write the logarithm as ln

I was taught in school in Spain that ln stood for "logaritmo neperiano" (named after John Napier). But the adjective goes before the noun in English so why isn't it nl instead

@socks we always assumed it was out of a desire to keep the first letter of all of them as l? we never really questioned it though
