@rey also while checking out of curiosity whether there are any other obscure meanings of the word date (there are a few, but all obviously derived from the time thing), we discovered that the word date meaning the social activity has been borrowed from english into danish, dutch, bokmål, and nynorsk (the latter two being the two main varieties of norwegian)
it's also a word in french, italian, spanish, and portuguese, all descended from the same latin root (an inflection of dō, to give)
