Pretty much everyone who's heard of Diablo Immortal has heard about how predatory the monetization is. We're talking half a million dollars to max ONE character, or spending upwards of a decade of free-to-play grinding.

A point that I'm surprised hasn't been widely made yet: That assumes the game actually stays up for a decade. If it goes down before then, it'd be completely impossible to max even a single character without paying.

The recent news of Ubisoft shutting down servers for some of their older titles without providing server source code proves that AAA gaming companies don't give a shit about their legacy. This has happened before, it will absolutely happen again.

It's shit like this that made us swear off AAA gaming entirely and pivot to mostly indie stuff, unless there's a particularly good sale or we can buy used.

Moral of the story: Corporations are not your friend, even if they make something you like.
