Politics and attack ads, Georgia

The ads against Warnock and Abrams aren't really doing anything to make me think less of them.

---

"But Warnock supported stimulus checks for *criminals* when we were giving out stimulus checks!"

Well how else are we gonna keep people out of jail and break the cycle of recidivism? Keeping people in poverty makes the problem worse.

---

"Abrams supports defunding the police! That means she supports *crime*!"

Well, the last time I went to a protest, the police were there with a heckin' tank. What possible legitimate use could the police have for a tank? And every dollar we spend on hurting people we don't like is another dollar we don't have for helping people who need help.

@ziphi what really gets us about the arguments against defunding police is, even if you accept (we don't, but that's another matter) that there are "good people" who need to be helped and "bad people" who need to be hurt, why would you prioritize hurting "bad people" over helping "good people"

that's just a foreign concept to us

reforming and defunding policing - discussing the perspective of the opposition

@Felthry The arguments I have heard from conservatives, having lived with them and around them for far too long, have at least been more nuanced and less "Hurt the bad guys!" than that.

However, they still have a crucial divorce between what they claim to support and what is actually happening.

re: reforming and defunding policing - discussing the perspective of the opposition

@ziphi It's good that there's more nuance to it. We're not super familiar with the details of the arguments, so perhaps I shouldn't have said anything like we were.

I suppose the main problem is probably still manipulative politicians. Someone says "vote for X to make Y not happen" when Y wasn't happening to begin with, nor would it have started to happen if X didn't win, and voting for X just makes Z happen instead, where Z is something the politician may want but the public doesn't

It feels like a lot of people are just being manipulated in general to enact policies that are against their best interests

@Felthry Oh yeah. Definitely.

The attack ads in particular were made to appeal to and manipulate the least informed of voters.

There is so much potential for harm in creating imaginary enemies out of real people and conjuring potential tragedy just to manipulate people into voting for someone.
