longpost on 90s/00s internet administration, birdsite

I'm just sitting here thinking about the internet when I was a kid, and how the biggest problem in the communities I ran in were megalomaniac BDFLs (sometimes explicitly without the B) just making changes and rules because they wanted to with no consideration for the community.

I don't think I could have really possibly foreseen how much worse it'd be when profit-seeking companies were in those positions of leadership instead.

I was thinking about the Jark deviantart favorites notification drama (haha dating myself again) and how that was awful and at the time I thought deviantart was the worst most user-hostile site in the world.

Haha no.

But then again, now we're looking at birdsite: which now has a megalomaniac single point of decision and leadership who has no consideration for community.

We've come full circle in one of the worst ways.

@Felthry "Benevolent dictator for life", the benevolent part sometimes used sarcastically. Usually though it refers to someone who "means well" but may suck at actually leading or listening to certain groups or concerns or otherwise shouldn't be in that position.
