putting it between /forward slashes/ means you're using broad transcription, where you're making assumptions about the phonemic inventory of a language to avoid having to be hyperspecific. if you put it between [square brackets] that means you're using narrow transcription and it should be pronounced exactly as written. if it's between ⟨angle brackets⟩ that means you're talking not about the sounds but about the symbols
