Final Fantasy 6 and Chrono Trigger are lauded as two of the best JRPGs ever. Many folks still put Chrono Trigger in their top ten lists. That's good for those games, but they're over 25 years old. Shouldn't people have made a lot of games that are even better, since then? Even just in their niche, at least ten? Are we doing something wrong?

I'd love to see a list of at least ten JRPGs that are better than those two, with explanations and justification for why.

@relee i can't do explanations adn justifications right now, but i can give you a couple jrpgs we like better than those, in no particular order:
- Wild Arms 3
- Tales of Vesperia
- Tales of Berseria
- Radiant Historia
- Baten Kaitos
- Xenoblade Chronicles
- Final Fantasy XIII
- Trails from Zero/Trails to Azure
- Trails in the Sky/Trails in the Sky SC
- Suikoden 2

@Felthry Thank you for the list! ^.^

I'd love to hear some explanations and justifications if you find the time.

It's true I haven't played a lot of them, too. Final Fantasy XIII gets a pretty bad rap in particular, but you're not the only one I've seen praise it.

I still need to get back to Suikoden 2 and finish it, too. I'm ashamed it was a gift and it took me so long to get to it, and then I didn't finish it. ^.^;;

@relee final fantasy xiii is super extremely anti-fascist and all the hatred of it seems to originate from one particularly influential youtuber who later went full mask-off fascist so, quite possible it isn't entirely in good faith there

there are also some valid problems with the game, too, of course

@Felthry Most of the bad things I've heard about it are about it being mostly straight corridors all through the game, or something?

I saw Lightning when I played World of Final Fantasy, and they seemed nice.

I just realized I played and beat World of Final Fantasy when I've probably beaten half or less of the mainline final fantasy games, and only played a few more than that. ^.^;;

@relee It is mostly straight corridors, and that is a point against it, but there's a case to be made that that argument is a cover for why they really were so vehemently against it.

Final Fantasy X was also mostly straight corridors, and it got some backlash for it, but nowhere near as much as XIII did. And it's a beloved classic of the series now.

@Felthry I definately hadn't heard about facism or anti-facism in relation to the game before. That said, a lot of folks seem to mix up facism with other forms of authoritarianism. I don't like the other forms either, mind.

I haven't played FFX yet. I want to, but things keep happening. I have too many JRPGs 'on hold' to try and go for it anyways.

I also liked Final Fantasy VIII but it seems rare for someone to like it and other Final Fantasy games, most folks I see like just 8 or the others.
