longpost ruminating on my experience trying to learn and teach go (baduk) to people

A couple years ago I really wanted to teach a couple of friends how to play go so I might have some people to pal around with that didn't make vee feel like a charity case or completely outmatched.

One friend took up the offer and we went through the game and they attentively sat and watched vee in a video call go over the extreme rote basics of the game and then we played one and they uh... utterly pasted vee.

After they went "Oh yeah I actually knew how to play, but your explanation was interesting!"

I felt like such a heel I actually quit playing entirely for two years. But now I kind of want to pick it up again but I'm in the same situation of not really having people to play with unless I go find randos on OGS.

Ever since my hardcore Dota years I've felt kind of... meh... about random matchmaking in games. At least with this one I wouldn't have a team screaming at vee; it's all vee.
