meta controversial masto feature

after two months of using mastodon 4 i have decided that the captive link thing is good actually

i mean it would be nice to have *also* a direct link that's not buried in an already overfull menu, but fuck i do like opening toots in a new tab in the local interface, and i do prefer a middle click to copying the link, opening a new tab, typing ch<Enter>, waiting a second for the react machine to boot up, pasting the link into the search bar, waiting 4-10 seconds for needless federation to happen, and then clicking the toot

before you get on my case

- i'm not saying it's perfect
- yes it would be nice if users could choose if they want captive links or remote links
- yeah it's weird with the tweetdeck layout. i can imagine a version of this that instead loads up the single column view always if you click on a link to a status or a profile, and gives you a button to load up the full tweetdeck if you've got that configured. and maybe a banner that says "this post was initially from example.net. [ view original ]"
- i don't know if it should be that way on the logged out view or not, haven't thought that much about it. the current situation where 1% of servers have it quietly patched out is like a little trap laid out for me when i'm investigating a report though
