if you work for the government in any capacity (even as like a USPS delivery driver or a public school teacher) there are certain holidays that you *must* have off by law, and your boss is allowed to give you other days off at their discretion

this is also true of people who work for banks though i'm not sure if that's a legal requirement or something else but there are some holidays where every financial institution is closed

@shnorbles@chitter.xyz some states with better union presence have laws that mandate days off for all workers too, that the workers are able to--at their choice, not the boss's--choose not to take off and get paid extra, i think (so if you get Christmas off but you don't care because you're not christian you can work that day and get paid double or whatever)

the actual laws are pretty complicated and we do not know them in any detail

@shnorbles@chitter.xyz you also have to be given a certain amount of paid time off that you can take whenever you want, so you can use that for holidays even if your workplace doesn't give everyone that day off anyway
