I'm really trying to enjoy cohost still because I need to keep up with people only there, but there's just so much "lol masto culture sux" discourse that it just feels frustrating and toxic half the time.

@Facet that was catty of me, i should try to be more doggy

and maybe i'll just muffle the term "mastodon" on there

@astra Unfortunate. I try not to make a scene out of all of it, but every time I think I've weeded out people doing that stuff, it keeps coming back up.

They really love their "dunk on everything but cohost, the site designed to not be a replacement for other social media" discourse.

@Facet @astra Techbro elitism is just the worst. Like, they can't even be happy in their preferred platform, they have to be miserable and shit on other people's choices of platforms.

@FreyaManibrandr @astra I'm willing to accept it as just a culture thing. There's a part of cohost that's... Weirdly obsessed with itself and cohost being an inherently superior and singular platform, and it leads to a lot of people getting awful, extremified takes about fedi and other media and blowing them up into a whole, cultish thing.

I've tried pulling the veil off this skewed rhetoric and showing how and where it doesn't make sense, but it's still there, even if less common these days.

@Facet @astra It really is just a cult. They should all go outside and touch grass.

@FreyaManibrandr @astra I don't really dislike it as a site all that much, but I really feel like, the closer you get to the people that make up the staff's inner social circle, the more bizarre the energy is.

@FreyaManibrandr @astra And I can't begin to pretend that it isn't all a meritocracy of "how much can I provide content that pleases that inner circle?"

@Facet @FreyaManibrandr that said, i am pretty fond of it as a thing to scroll once in a while but i find contributing less fun, kimmy loves it, cassiopeia can never think about what to post there and it tires her

everything has its flaws but we at least feel like we can be ourselves here

@astra @FreyaManibrandr Yeah. Like I don't feel as inherently bad there as I used to, once I unfollowed a bunch of people and kept away from groups I didn't like.

But I just have this creeping feeling that since that group is "the core social center of the website," that they're spreading a lot of misinformative rhetoric and bad sentiment in general.

@astra @FreyaManibrandr I just feel bad because I was doing well, was thinking I was over it, and then it comes up once and I've been bent out of shape for hours.

I'm trying to relax, it's just, a whole lot bubbled up all at once and I'm trying to keep it from burning onto the stovetop.

@Facet @astra Yeah, don't get caught up in the whole platform jingoism game. It's not good for your mental health.

@Facet @FreyaManibrandr oh hun i feel that. i'm really sorry and i hope you can do something relaxing and fulfilling today.

i want to commiserate more than adding fuel to the fire, and as such i'm going to aim to be more constructive

@astra Mostly I just want to distract from it with something else, probably stop thinking about cohost for a bit if it can make me behave that fragile.

@astra I would love to talk more sometime though, if you'd like. Trying to branch out and socialize more was how this stuff started, anyway.

@Facet i'd love to! maybe DM with your preferred talking medium and we can when i have some free time?

@astra Discord is easiest for me, but in here is good too.

@Facet @astra Yeah, that is a big red flag to me. Meritocracy is just another way of building unjust hierarchies.
