@bea what was the old malloc algorithm?

@Fuego according to one thing i read this morning it's plain old malloc but someone the other day mentioned tcmalloc so honestly i'm not sure. apparently jemalloc fragments less than both so we'll see if it helps

@bea dlmalloc is oldschool "regular", but it depends on your system whats default.

jemalloc fragments (very) much less than dl for sure, but is also very very predictable

tcmalloc fragments less but at the expense of using WAY more memory on some programs

Been looking at LLVM's Scudo recently, which seems to be competitive with (and sometimes better than) jemalloc wrt memory usage and overall speed on small SMP systems. Not sure how mature it is tho

@hellamander @bea is it still per process per size pools with out of band metadata?
