FWIW, I moved from Twitter to Masto in 2018 when an experimental Twitter feature started pushing political notifications directly to my device. It's definitely not the same audience, but it's much easier to have a conversation here.
For folks making the jump, especially artists looking to still have an audience or outlet for your art, be aware that posts do fewer numbers here, but smaller posts are more typically seen, because of the lack of noise and lack of algorithms shaping all the things.
Twitter is still better for making large posts for folks that draw income from them, since that's kind of what it's shaped itself to be. I have no idea if that will persist, but it probably will, and retaining presence there for business isn't a bad idea.
Masto has been described more like a set of quiet coffee shops from a few folks here, and that fits well. You'll generally find more and deeper conversations here, because it's mostly a set of federated forums with social media presentation.
