It's kinda depressing how tumblr is imploding now and I'm seeing half my follow list go "man, after seeing both twitter and tumblr do this, it's really showing how it's a bad idea for a social media network to be run by a company who can make arbitrary changes without user consent.

@foone I've kind of speculated before that some of this is generational. Folks used to the usenet/forum/irc days of self-hosting seem more cozy to building it ourselves, and the risks of single instances imploding over corporate control.
I think more though, most folks have kind of accepted being some form of digital nomads as places rise and fall. But watching folks adapt to corporate sites by dancing to their tune (ie, "the algorithm" laundering shitty practices) hurts to watch.
