So Nintendo is issuing copyright takedowns to get Garry's Mod assets removed that have Nintendo IPs in them. There are several things about this that stand out to me, depending on the exact details of the situation here.
- I know that everything around Yuzu is rather fuzzy and grey but this just comes off as being petty and mean. It's like taking away a kid's toys because they cut the heads off and swapped them around and said they're "playing with them wrong".
- If this is reusing Nintendo-made ripped assets, then there's legal precedent to say that stuff should be taken down, even if it sucks on a *moral* level, because frankly if you're not selling it who cares if its ripped assets?
- If they're having *original* assets removed too then we start getting into ugly grey areas about the legal validity of fanart. (Garry's Mod might remove those addons themselves, simply because it's easier than checking every single mod for if they're ripped or custom.)
- Some people may have been profiting off of their addons/mods, which is its own legal wrinkle. I would be surprised if anyone was selling Garry's Mod stuff though. (And even then, it's not going to hurt Nintendo's profits, they have all the money forever.)
- Something must have set Nintendo off to act now. It's possible they're being protective of their IPs because they're often making kid-centric content, and they want to protect kids from accidentally stumbling upon non-official kid-unsafe stuff. However I don't think that's Nintendo's job, that's the *parents of those kids'* job.
I dunno, I don't even play Garry's Mod and this all just kind of sucks to keep happening.
