Home Improvement!
Room AC arrived today! A shame I can't actually put it to use until Saturday though. I don't have the kind of window these things were designed for (windows that slide UP; mine slide left!) so I have to build a makeshift frame to fit inside the sliding window frame. Going to be an interesting project! Plan is to build a new sash for my sliding window, exact same dimensions as the current sashes. Inside that sash will be a couple of boards to frame out where the A/C will be mounted in. And if I can afford it, I'll likely get some polycarbonate sheeting to fill in the gaps rather than OSB or foam paneling so it still looks somewhat like a window built with an A/C in mind. Might even get a replacement window lock so I can easily unlock and swap out the sashes in the spring/fall!
re: Home Improvement!
Absolutely need the window unit because even though I have central air throughout the whole first floor this room appears to be some kind of weird heatsink. The closet isn't insulated properly so it tends to match the temperature and humidity level of the back entry, which explains where the humidity comes from most days. But the heat is a huge mystery. Rest of the house can be a cool 70 degrees, but my room will clock in at 75-83 degrees, even with the closet shut. I can't tell if the heat is coming from a poorly insulated exterior wall, the chimney that runs just outside my bedroom wall that connects to a gas water heater downstairs (which raises some carbon monoxide concerns if that is the case but it's not setting off any alarms so maybe it's fine?) or if it's coming from me, because I practically radiate heat. I very well could be literally heating the room above the ambient temperature of the rest of the house.
