How can one talk discuss persistent, long-term patterns of abusive behavior from someone who has themselves become a target of widespread abuse? The need to defend someone facing abuse sometimes gives abusers cover of their own, and that looks like a hard problem and it keeps me up at night sometimes.

@Kistaro This is usually where the target's trusted friends need to step in, if any of them have enough integrity to turn the mirror and enough good-will credits to be listened when they tell an unpleasant truth.
