My weird D&D take isn’t that I don’t like drow but why.

The opposite of “what a cool monster I want to play it” is wanting to fight “good guys.” And while dwarves have a lot of traits that could turn nasty really quickly, their skill and love for metalwork mean “evil dwarf” looks different and cool. Elvish xenophobia, individuality and sensuality can become open racism, selfishness and sadism easily, but

1) what’re you gonna do with the aesthetics, make ‘em purple and slap spiders on ‘em and

Follow

2) an elf going racist empire builder or territorial makes a great adversary as is.

I actually like shadar-kai a lot more. They’re a lot more Unseelie and weird, with that little bit of masochism fitting nicely into both aesthetics and motivation.
