I like Mastodon, but it’s greatest strength is Twitter’s greatest weakness and vice versa. Centralization means I can blunder into say, herpetologist Twitter, which I absolutely adore, instead of having to know liz.ard exists and then if awoo federates with it; but centralization means it’s always easy to encounter ultra rightwing Twitter AND if Twitter goes, say because new management is completely in love with an unviable business model, all of it goes.
@Leucrotta Huh; I think we get some of that discoverability - not all, but some - simply by being on an open-until-proven-nasty instance. Federation with those other instances can happen randomly.
