Clear Warning discourse
Look, one of the things Mastodon has going for it is CWs. So declaring that not using CWs is something that’s morally right and it’s vital to shove whatever right into everyone’s collective snoots? In addition to any other concerns, you’ve just made (old style, pre fash takeover) Twitter only elsewhere.
re: Clear Warning discourse
@Leucrotta I agree, and I use CWs when appropriate. I don't agree however in forcing people to use CWs for other than adult/violent/nsfw material. There's always muting if you don't want to see content from someone.
And the main reason I oppose forcing CWs for anything else is because nobody can seem to agree on what should be CWed. I've seen people asking for CWs on cat pictures. There should be an expected baseline and I think adult/violent/nsfw content is the best one.
re: Clear Warning discourse
@zorinlynx @Leucrotta Honestly, I'd say a good default is probably 'is this a Heavy Topic', not just violence, but also things like bigotry and other Stuff That's Wrong With The World.
Yeah, it's important, but that doesn't mean we should get it shoved in our snoot with no way to avoid it.
Filters don't work because "heavy shit" is extremely broad and there's all sorts of different kinds of it; muting doesn't work because I don't want to have to mute our friends just because they're posting heavy stuff, and /also/ heavy stuff can come in from boosts and we can't mute everyone. And it's not like "heavy topics" is a hyperspecific thing that only one or two critters need CWed.
re: Clear Warning discourse
@zorinlynx @Leucrotta It's not about forcing anyone to use CWs; it's about respect. It's about "hey, could you please respect my boundaries instead of shoving that in my face?".
re: Clear Warning discourse
@frostwolf @zorinlynx @Leucrotta i don't really enforce a cw for anything other than what zorin said, but in practice i cw anything i think of as heavy, too. and like stuff that's gross. if a friend asks me to cw a topic because it skeevs them out, i usually do it, because i care about that person
re: Clear Warning discourse
@Leucrotta Yeppp.
People demanding they get to shove their stuff into our snoot without so much as a heads-up are saying we're bad for /having boundaries/.
Clear Warning discourse
@Leucrotta sounds like somebody's lost their you seeing boosts from that user privileges!
re: Clear Warning discourse (tangent on CW naming)
@Leucrotta huh, did they rename CWs for some reason?
I just now noticed hovering over the CW button here says "Hide text behind warning" instead of "Content warning".
I wouldn't put it past Gargron to do that for no apparent reason.
