old skool D&D opinion, childhood abuse mention
When you're a kid who's been told that you're worthless, disposable, and stupid, on the losing end of life being phrased as this big exclusive competition, roleplaying games where you're the hero (and so is anyone else playing with you) and there is no win or lose condition (if you get killed doing something cool, that's a win!) are incredibly appealing. I am now realizing that part of why I HATED The Tomb of Horrors is that it hit the same "ha ha, look at you, the ADULT is way smarter and more powerful than you, and you don't get to option to do something different" emotions that I got from dealing with my Dad or the fucking teachers in my fucking schools.
