@LexYeen I feel like pokemon/digimon are kinda an odd exception that way because, as "creatures which aren't exactly a real animal but sort of vaguely based on them, then given brighter colors and magical abilities" they're a lot closer to fan content. Like they're still made by a big company, but they're thematically similar enough it's a lot less of a stretch.

@Leucrotta Ehhh... They're a huge grey area for me, which winds up boiling down to "depends entirely on individual characters." There's a difference between "character set in the same universe as literally Sonic the Hedgehog" and "literally a Sonic the Hedgehog recolor," if you get my meaning.
It's why I try to put my own spin on characters set in or using elements from corporate-owned properties. It feels *weird* not to, and I'm not sure why.
