the evolution of D&D is like other evolution, where derived forms aren't completely derived; there are weird holdovers, bits that don't seem functional, and holdovers of multiple "aha!" moments.

HD/HP. Armor class. Alignment. "Race"/ancestry as determinants. etc.

Some of it is what a Catholic would call the power of tradition. Which leads me to ANECDOTE TIME...
