See to me the point of Liking Geek Stuff is it appeals to you and HAPPENS to be geeky. It’s like my Dad’s pseudo intellectualism; you like Verdi, Dvorak, Stravinsky et al because that’s the good shit, not because it’s intellectual shit. The need to live genuinely in the short time I have; Circle Jerks, Against Me and Rollins Band do the same things for me as Sibelius and Schostakovich. I’d postulate “Geek Culture” is an attempt to easily define pattern and identity in an increasingly more chaotic mass of information, but also y’gotta ask who makes bank off that?
Counter example, if I say “intellectuals must love Kurosawa, Bergman and Leone” that’s obnoxious at worst, but if TOHO says all intellectuals must love them, and coincidentally Toho happens to own a batch of Bergman and Leone films, that’s not exactly a sheer love for high falutin’ film.
